Non-NHS Services

It is important to understand that GPs are not employed by the NHS.  They are self-employed and they have to cover their costs – staff, buildings, heating, lighting etc in the same way as a small business.

The Government’s contract with GPs covers medical services to NHS patients, including the provision of ongoing medical treatment.  However, more and more organisations have been involving doctors in a whole range of non-medical work.  Sometimes the only reason that GPs are asked is because they are in a position of trust in the community or because an insurance company or employer wants to ensure that information provided to them is true and accurate.

Examples of non-NHS servcies for which GPs can charge their own NHS patients are:

– Accident, sickness certificates for insurance purposes

– School fee and holiday insurance certificates

– Reports for gyms or fitness events, or other courses to certify patients are fit to exercise or attend the course

– Life assurance and income protection reports

– Reports for the DWP

– HGV, Racing Car, Taxi Licences, Diving Medical, Shotgun licences

– Information to validate private medical insurance

– Passport photos, travel vaccinations

It would be very helpful if you could give us as much notice as possible for us to complete these forms.  Please do not expect them to be completed overnight.  We will expect payment upfront in most cases and a list of charges can be found here or please call reception.  Written consent will also be required from the patient before any information is realeased to any third party eg Insurance Company, solicitor.
